ENG 403 provides an upper-division study of one of the following areas: the Western literary tradition (including courses on major authors from Italian, French, Spanish, German, Scandinavian, Yiddish, and Russian traditions); one or more of the traditional genres (epic, romance, lyric, tragedy, comedy, essay, novel, short story); literary criticism and theory; history of the English language; or advanced writing (creative, research, expository).
